In the 18th century the chiefs of the ancient Kennedy and Campbell clans, both perhaps of British descent, built new castles for themselves in the Celtic west. The ruins of the original Campbell stronghold stand on an island in Loch Awe, from where the first Earl of Argyll moved to Inveraray on Loch Fyne in 1474. Here the third Duke of Argyll began the building of a new seat in the 1740's, using members of the Adam family to design an early essay in Gothic revival at a time when the classical style was in vogue. In the 1770's the ninth Earl of Cassellis likewise decided to add to all the Kennedy castles of Galloway. He commissioned Robert Adam to transform his mansion on the cliffs of Culzean into one of the masterpieces of his genius. With its surrounding country park it is a jewel of the National Trust for Scotland. Robert Adam's restored interiors invite comparison with those of Robert Mylne at Inveraray, who had won a 'prize in the highest class' in Rome in 1758, under the jealous eyes of Robert Adam. His plaster work at Inveraray miraculously escaped damage in a disastrous fire in 1975, and remains a special feature of the home of Scotland's premier Duke. Dr Grimble
